Death, Funeral

His funeral, which was conducted in Baghdad on January 4th, was attended by hundreds of Iraqis, mourners, and militia flags. The funeral began in Baghdad’s AI-Kadhimiya Mosque. Iraq’s prime minister, Adil Abdul-Mahdi, and other commanders of Iran-backed militias were among those who joined the burial procession. His body was transferred to the sacred Shia cities of Karbala and Najaf when he passed away.

Professional life and career

Following the Iranian Revolution, Qasim joined the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and began his professional career in 1979. Qasim was also in charge of preparing and leading irregular warfare activities carried out by the Ramadan Headquarters within Iraq. He was then appointed as the commander of the IRGC between 1997 and 1998, and he was regarded one of the prospective successors to the job of Irgc commander.

In 1999, Qasem wrote a letter to then-President Mohammad Khatami about student protests. They penned;

“Dear Mr. Khatami, how much longer must we cry, be saddened by events, practice democracy via turmoil and insults, and have revolutionary patience at the cost of destroying the system?” Dear President, if you do not take a revolutionary stance and act in accordance with your Islamic and national objectives, tomorrow would be so late and irreversible that it will be impossible to imagine.”

He has also earned awards such as the Order of Faith and the Order of Zolfaghar.
