On July 19, 1967, Omar was born into a rich Habr Awal Isaaq family in Hargeisa, Somalia. His family was originally from Hargeisa and were Muslims. Abdullahi Omaar was his father’s name, and Sahra Omaar was his mother’s. When he was two years old, he relocated to the United Kingdom.

Omaar returned to London a year later to work as a producer and broadcast journalist for the BBC. Then, after being selected as the BBC’s Africa reporter, he relocated to South Africa. Throughout 2004, Omaar’s wife and children were also relocated there, and his daily commuting made his personal life difficult.

Live coverage of events in Iraq and Somalia is among his best work. He also covered the Iraq invasion for the news network on which he was working, as well as everyday BBC News bulletins and BBC News. Omaar joined AL Jazeera English’s London Division as a Middle Eastern correspondent in September 2006.
