Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, tested positive for COVID-19!

Kentucky Republican Rand Paul is the first US senator to test positive for coronavirus. His story heightened the feeling of urgency in Senate talks over a major stimulus package. Other senators chose to self-quarantine on Sunday afternoon, postponing the negotiations.

Senator Rand Paul went for the new coronavirus on March 16, despite his considerable travel and fragile health. He did not, however, take any efforts to self-quarantine before his results were released.

During the six days that his results were pending, the Kentucky Republican continued to vote on the Senate floor, deliver a speech criticizing a coronavirus aid measure, and hold strategy discussions with fellow GOP senators. All of these gatherings disregarded federal guidelines prohibiting gatherings of more than ten persons.

Paul’s office posted on his Twitter account on March 22nd. According to the statement, he is fine and performed the test out of caution. Some senators and aides, though, are upset with Paul. It is so because senators were potentially exposed to the coronavirus by not doing enough to self-quarantine earlier.

Senator Rand’s defense

Nonetheless, Paul justified his decision, saying in a statement on Monday that it was his “extra precaution” that prompted him to be tested. He stated:

“For those who want to criticize me for lack of quarantine, realize that if the rules on testing had been followed to a tee, I would never have been tested and would still be walking around the halls of the Capitol. The current guidelines would not have called for me to get tested nor quarantined. It was my extra precaution, out of concern for my damaged lung, that led me to get tested.”

Reaction from other Senators

He attended a huge black-tie social gathering in Louisville, Kentucky, a few weeks ago. Several attendees there afterwards tested positive. This includes Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer’s wife.

During a lunch on Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reminded his colleagues that Paul was tested because he attended the event. Utah Senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney both declared they will self-quarantine after discovering he tested positive.

Republican senators told CNN that Paul was in the gym with colleagues on Sunday morning, and several noted how close Paul had sat to others during recent Senate lunches. Kansas Senator Jerry Moran also stated that he spotted Paul at the Senate swimming pool on Sunday.

Furthermore, Senator John Thune of South Dakota stated on the Senate floor that the senators will seek medical counsel. Furthermore, because he is also a doctor, his colleagues are particularly irritated with him. He should have known better, they believe. In addition, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and other members of Congress have self-quarantined in recent weeks after coming into contact with someone who tested positive.

Why did Senator Paul decide to test for the Covid-19 virus?

Rand Paul discovered on March 15 that two people he met at a Kentucky event tested positive for coronavirus. One of these events was the Speed Art Museum’s “Speed Ball” on March 7.

Although he did not communicate with them, he received the test quickly, according to sources, and he did so after considering the special sensitivity of persons with respiratory and lung disorders. Paul underwent lung surgery in 2019 after a neighbor attacked him at his house in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2017. He also had six broken ribs and damaged lungs as a result of the incident. He also has shortness of breath on occasion.

Furthermore, Sergio Gor, Paul’s Deputy Chief of Staff, stated that Paul “expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period concludes and will continue to fight for the people of Kentucky during this difficult time.” He further stated that the D.C. office began working remotely, resulting in almost no staff contact with the coronavirus-positive Senator Paul.

Paul, on the other hand, is the third member of Congress to be diagnosed with Covid-19. Previous lawsuits involved Florida Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and Utah Democratic Rep. Ben McAdams. On March 18, Republican Mario Diaz-Balart became the first member of Congress to test positive for coronavirus. Likewise, Ben McAdams revealed that he tested positive for the virus.

Paul, who is deaf in one ear, was wearing noise-cancelling headphones at the time of the assault. The incident was described as “a really unpleasant quarrel between two neighbors about an issue that most people would see as insignificant” by the neighbor’s attorney, Matthew Baker. Rene continually assailed him by leaving tree yard debris near his property border with his neighbor.

As a result of the injuries sustained during the assault, a portion of Paul’s lung had to be removed in August 2019. Boucher’s 30-day sentence was vacated once more in September 2019 by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. They ruled that the punishment was too short. They also stated that “closer review” was required and sent the matter back to the lower court for resentencing.
