By winning his weight class and receiving all-state recognition, Evans, a former wrestler who graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School in New York, made it to the state finals competition twice. Evans placed fourth in the state in 1997 while weighing 145 pounds. When he weighed 171 pounds in 1998, he again placed fourth in the country. In the same competition, he took first place in the 165-pound weight class in 2000.

Evans competed at Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA Division I early in his career. He finished fourth in the 2002 conference championships and lost by decision against UFC fighter Jacob Volkmann. He won the Big Ten Championship in 2003 and subsequently came in third place in the same competition. Evans wins his first match before losing to Robbie Waller as Rashad debuts in the NCAA Division I Championships.

Evans’ martial arts career at Michigan State came to an end with an impressive record of 48 wins and 34 losses. The three-time National Champion Greg Jones was his next opponent.
