Ricky Craven began racing at Unity Raceway at the age of 15, where he won twice and was voted Rookie of the Year. The next year, he won 12 feature races and the track championship. At Oxford Plains Speedway in 1986, he made his NASCAR debut in his own No. 12 car, finishing 25th due to engine failure. Four years later, he won Rookie of the Year in the Busch North Series.
In 1999, he accepted a contract with Scott Barbour’s SBIII Motorsports, a brand new NASCAR team, to drive the No. 58 Ford Taurus. After a few weeks, he joined another new team, Midwest Transit Racing.
