Aston Villa

Rob Edwards sets off his football career as an apprentice with Aston Villa where he worked his way up to his first-team debut on 28th December 2002, in a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough. He then signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the club and was transferred on loan to First Division team Crystal Palace in November 2003, where he stayed one month, playing six games and scoring one goal in a 1-1 tie with Coventry City.

In January 2004, he joined fellow First Division team Derby County on loan and played 10 games for the club, scoring a goal in a 2-1 home win over Gillingham on 17th January. Later he was notified by Aston Villa manager David O’Leary that he might leave the club in May 2004.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Rob joined Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2004 in a three-year agreement where he received more playing time in the 2005-2006 campaign. He played the most of the following season under new manager Mick McCarthy but sustained knee ligament damage in April 2007. On 9th February 2008, he scored his only goal for Wolves in a 4-2 home defeat to Stoke City and was placed on the transfer list in May.

Blackpool

Edwards left Wolves to join Blackpool, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year for an undisclosed price on 6th August 2008. On 9th August 2008, he made his debut for the Seasiders in a 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City and was captain of the side for the 1-1 draw at Norwich City on 16th August. Rob’s first goal for the “Seasiders” occurred on 29th December 2008 when he scored Blackpool’s second equalizer in a 2-2 draw against his previous club Wolverhampton Wanderers at Bloomfield Road.

He agreed to a new contract with Blackpool on 19th July 2010, a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, and made his first Premier League game since 2003 in a 3-2 loss at his previous side Aston Villa on 10th November 2010. He supposedly signed for Championship team Norwich City on loan till the end of the season on 21st February 2011. Then he made his debut as a second-half substitute for Zak Whitbread in the 1-1 draw against Preston North End on 5th March, as well as made two more appearances as the club achieved promotion to the Premier League.

Barnsley

Rob was recruited for Barnsley on a free transfer, becoming Keith Hill’s eighth acquisition of the summer where he made his debut for the club in a 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest on 21st February 2012. He was loaned to League Two club Fleetwood Town in 2012 and the following 31st January, Edwards returned to his home county and joined League One team Shrewsbury Town on loan for a month. However, days after the deal was expanded for the rest of the season, he was ruled out with a thigh muscle injury in training.

International career

Rob Edwards represented England at the youth level, but not in a UEFA-recognised game, therefore qualified for Wales as his parents are both Welsh. On 29th March 2003, he made his debut for Wales before he departed Aston Villa in a 4-0 European Championship qualification victory against Azerbaijan.

Coaching career

Rob confirmed on 11th October 2013 that he had retired from professional football at the age of 30. After that, he became the Under-18s coach at Wolves, and his first season in charge (2014-2015) was rated very successful by the local newspaper “Express & Star”. He was appointed interim head coach at Wolves following the resignation of Walter Zenga on 25th October 2016 He was named as the new manager of his hometown club AFC Telford United on 28th June 2017.

On 20th July 2018, he was named as the head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers U23 Later he left Wolves to take up a ‘prestigious post’ with The Football Association working as a coach with the England U20s in October 2019. He was hired as head coach for the England under-16 squad on 24th September 2020.

Forest Green Rovers

Edwards was named Head Coach of League Two team Forest Green Rovers on 27th May 2021 by commencing the post on 4th June in order to be allowed to conclude the season with his England sides. He departed the club following negotiations with Watford on 11th May 2021.

Watford

Rob was appointed as the next head coach of Watford on 11th May 2022, taking over from Roy Hodgson at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season. On 1st August, his debut game was a 1-0 home win over Sheffield United with a goal by Joao Pedro.
