His main musical interests were rock & roll, and he felt compelled to start his own band, which he named Apparitions, with his other high school classmates. Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ray Charles were Ronnie’s musical role models.

He did so well in school that he was given a full college scholarship to study law at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. He continued to play music while pursuing his studies, and this time he became a member of the well-known R&B band Dimensions. The trio became well-known in Atlanta, and its performances at the Royal Peacock Club drew large crowds. In 1964, he decided to give up his law practice and devote himself entirely to music.
