Briggs began training at Jimmy O’Pharrow’s Starrett City Boxing Club in Brooklyn, New York when he was seventeen years old. In his amateur days, he was the New York City Golden Gloves champion, the New York State Champion, and several other titles. Briggs made his professional debut in 1992, defeating John Basil Jackson via KO.

Briggs fought ten times in 1992, winning nine of them by TKO in the first round. In 1996, he lost his first professional match to Darroll Wilson. He lost his first title match in 1998 to Lennox Lewis. Shannon won his first IBO heavyweight title in 2003 by TKO in the first round over John Sagent.

Briggs won the vacant WBC FECARBOX heavyweight title, the WBA–NABA heavyweight title, and the WBO–NABO heavyweight title in back-to-back fights at the end of 2005. In 2007, he lost his WBO heavyweight title to Sultan Ibragimov, and in 2010, he lost his WBC heavyweight title. Shannon’s last game was against Emilio Zarate in 2012. Briggs has won 53 of his sixty professional boxing fights by knockout.
