Slim Pickens was born on June 29, 1919, in Kingsburg, California, USA, as Louis Burton Lindley Jr. He was the son of Louis Bert Lindley Sr. and Sally Mosher (mother). He grew up alongside his brother, Samuel T. Lindley, better known as Easy Pickens. In terms of schooling, he attended Hanford High School in Hanford, California.

Early Professional Career

Slim Pickens began riding horses at the age of four and went on to become an exceptional rider. Despite the fact that his father disliked horseback riding, he acquired an interest in it. He changed his identity from Louis Burton Lindley Jr. to Slim Pickens so his father wouldn’t find out about his involvement.

After he stated that,

‘My father was opposed to rodeoing and told me he never wanted to see my name on the entry lists again.’ While I was pondering what to call myself, an elderly boy sitting on a cart suggested, ‘Why don’t you call yourself Slim Pickens, ’cause that’s shore what yer prize money’ll be.

Professional Career

Slim Pickens was well known as a superb horseback rider and bucking bull rider. In 1946, he transitioned from rodeo to acting after a long career in rodeo. He made his film debut in Smoky, which was a box office success. At a rodeo in 1950, he was discovered by American actor and director William Keighley, who helped him land the role of Plank in Rocky Mountain.

Later in his career, he acted in a number of films, including The Last Musketeer, Iron Mountain Trail, One-Eyed Jacks, and Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. He has also provided his voice for films such as Seekers of the Fleece, Silver Dollar City, and The Black Hole.

Later in life, he died as a result of pneumonia.
