The Career of Steve Sohmer

Sohmer began his writing career as a Shakespearean scholar and as a fiction and nonfiction author. Robert Gottlieb of Simon & Schuster published Sohmer’s first novel, The Way It Was, in 1996. The book garnered a lot of excellent feedback. Not to add that Steve’s book was named one of the top 20 books of the year by the New York Times.

 

In cooperation with The Minneapolis Star and Tribune Company, the former creative director of the American Newspaper Publishers Association’s Bureau of Advertising founded his own media promotion agency. The New York-based agency then developed PowerPoint and firm sales presentations for media clients over the next five years.

Sohmer previously worked for NBC as an Executive Vice President and as President and Chief Operating Officer of Columbia Pictures. From 1982 to 1985, he was in charge of NBC’s primetime specials, daytime shows, children’s programming, and The Tonight Show. In addition, 15 of the top 30 primetime specials were produced by NBC.

Steve managed successful productions such as Stand By Me, Hope and Glory, and Roxanne while he was still new to Columbia. He’s been freelancing and managing adaptations of his own published work since then. He has worked on a number of television programs, including the 43rd Annual Emmy Awards.
