Childhood and Family

Tas Pappas was born on February 9, 1975, and is 48 years old. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and grew up in the north-western suburb of St Albans. Tasou Micah Pappas is also his full name. Tas Pappas had a brother named Ben Pappas, according to his family. Regrettably, on March 10, 2007, authorities discovered Ben’s body floating beneath the Victoria Dock pier.

Furthermore, Tas Pappas’ parents are father Bill Pappas and mother Kerry Pappas (nee Bardot). His father was born in Egypt and is of Greek descent, and his mother is an Australian caterer. His parents, however, divorced when he was a child.

Tas stated in the 2014 documentary All This Mayhem that his and his brother’s childhood was “pretty hectic.” He continued, saying:

“The family was extremely dysfunctional… As children, we were traumatized by many of the fights we witnessed… I’ve always felt like I just wanted to get out of where I was and prove myself. Because of it all, I ended up with what felt like a chip on my shoulder. Also, I just wanted to come to America and make something of myself.”

Tas Pappas became interested in skateboarding when he was 12 years old. It all started when I saw touring American professionals perform at Prahran Skate Park. Three years later, Tas Pappas made his first trip to the United States. He then moved to the United States when he was 17 years old. When he moved to the United States, he had already dropped out of Kings Park High School. Tas Pappas first lived in Tampa, Florida, with other skateboarders.

He also took part in a number of major international competitions. During the 1990s, the Pappas brothers were internationally renowned skateboarders. Tas was number one in the world, and his brother Ben was number two.

Contest History

Tas Pappas defeated Tony Hawk to win both titles at the Hard Rock Cafe Skateboarding World Championships in 1996. Tas Pappas soon suffered a number of serious injuries as a result of this. As a result, he was unable to compete or maintain the level of skateboarding at which he had been prior to the mishaps.

Tas Pappas then excelled in a series of events in 1999. This included the X Games as well as the Milwaukee Triple Crown. This occurred following his physical rehabilitation for his injuries. He also won the vert skateboarding event at the LG Action Sports World Championship on October 28, 2006.

Tas Pappas defeated Brazilian professional Sandro Dias in a tiebreaker at this event. Tas Pappas performed a 720-degree rotation in his RevDeck skateboard deck during his winning run. One of the competition’s commentators called it “flawless.” Furthermore, Tas Pappas completed the run without making a single mistake.

Awards and Achievements

Tas Pappas and his brother Ben Pappas were both credited with helping to resurrect vert skateboarding’s popularity. The sport was beginning to fade at the time. This occurred following Tas Pappas’ success in the Hard Rock Cafe competition.

The Pappas brothers were then ranked number 10 in Transworld Skateboarding’s “10 Infamous Australians” article in August 2011 for “rekindling[ing] vert’s flickering candle” during the 1990s.

Furthermore, Tas Pappas became the 12th skateboarder in history and the first Australian to complete a 900-degree rotation. In April 2014, it was at the “Megaranch,” a newly constructed facility on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia. He set this record during the Anzac Day holiday.

How is the Personal Life of Tas Pappas?

Deportation, Marriage, and Drug Abuse

Tas Pappas married Colleen in 2005. Collen is from the United States, and they met through skateboarding. The couple and their two children lived in San Diego. Their relationship was strained, however, due to financial difficulties.

Following this, Tas Pappas began using crystal methamphetamine to numb the pain of injuries sustained during competitions in which he desperately competed to earn money. Doctors also prescribed him an antidepressant after he sought help for a low emotional state caused by his life situation.

He did, however, combine the medication with alcohol and cocaine. Tas explained in 2014 that his drug use led to paranoia about his wife being involved in an extramarital relationship. As a result, during an argument, he physically assaulted Colleen. A two-month prison sentence was imposed as a result of this incident.

Tas was later deported after authorities discovered him in a drug-related car accident during his parole period. He received a phone call from his father while waiting to be flown to Australia. Tas learned of his brother Ben Pappas’s death through this phone call. Tas Pappas calls this the “saddest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Smuggling of drugs and incarceration

Tas began drinking heavily after returning to Australia in 2007. During this time, his father died from a heart attack the following year. Then, in 2008, he flew to South America to try to smuggle cocaine into Australia. He did so in order to pay off a drug debt.

However, he was apprehended by authorities at Sydney Airport. This was due to the presence of cocaine traces on his clothing. Tas had attempted to smuggle the drug in three skateboard decks while high on benzodiazepines, alcohol, and amphetamines at the time. Tas was sentenced to three years in prison in various New South Wales facilities as a result of this incident.

Beginning in 2010,

Tas Pappas was granted weekend prison day release by authorities in November 2011. He took advantage of the opportunity to skate the vert ramp in Albury, New South Wales. After internet blogs reported Albury visits, SLAM Skateboarding Magazine ran a feature on Pappas in December 2011.

They also claimed that Tas was still one of Australia’s most skilled skateboarders at the time. Stewart’s video footage, which was published by SLAM to coincide with the article, revealed that it was Pappas’ “third skate in 3 years” due to his incarceration.

Tas currently resides in the inner north-eastern Melbourne, Australia suburb of Clifton Hill as of May 2014. Tas lives with Helen Norman and their five-year-old son Billy. He works as an abseiling window cleaner and attends mass at a Christian church.

In May 2014, he revealed his diagnosis of borderline personality disorder as a result of his childhood sexual abuse. He (or his doctors) refers to his self-destructive behavior as a symptom of the disorder. Pappas stated the following about his personal life recovery process, which he was still working on at the time of the interview:

“Everything had to happen in order for me to learn… Dad had to die, Ben had to die, and I had to give up my children. I needed to be humbled. I was too angry, and I had to be crippled and put on my knees to realize I wasn’t in control.”

Tas described himself as a “work in progress” in a July 2014 interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), saying, “I’ll take ownership of all my shit actions.”
