In 1985, Tim and Matt Freeman, a former classmate, formed the band Basic Radio. Despite not putting out any albums or EPs, they did record demos before breaking up. He co-founded a different Operation Ivy band in 1987; they split up in 1989 after releasing their debut record.

Armstrong and Freeman founded a new Dance Hall Crashers group in 1989. The band’s members were Grant Mclntire, Erik Larsen, Andrew Champion, and Joel Schaaf. They opened their doors at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley in 1989. Soon after for various personal reasons, Tim and Freeman left. Although they only lasted three months, they both joined the band Downfall.

Tim Armstrong’s life began to deteriorate over time, and he gave in to depression and alcoholism. The worst happened later, when he lost his home. His friend Freeman proposed that they start a new band in the hopes that it would aid in his recovery from alcoholism. Tim started writing songs for the group, which eventually evolved into Rancid.

With nine albums released, Rancid is one of the most successful punk rock bands ever. The band has enjoyed tremendous success since its inception. They include Honor Is All We Know, Trouble Maker, Indestructible, Life Won’t Wait, and Let’s Go.
