Tom Cole

Since 2003, Tom Cole has served as the United States Representative for Oklahoma’s 4th congressional district. In addition, he is a Republican Party member. serving as the Minority Whip’s Deputy. Tom Cole was a member of the Chickasaw Nation and is one of just four Native Americans who have been officially recognized. From 2006 to 2008, he was the head of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

Tom Cole earned a B.A. from Grinnell College and an M.A. from Yale University in 1984, among other postgraduate degrees. In 1984, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.

Before becoming a politician, he was a history and politics professor at a university. Cole was the Executive Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee after serving in the Oklahoma Senate from 1988 to 1991. He served as Oklahoma’s Secretary of State under Governor Frank Keating from 1995 to 1999, and aided in the recovery operations after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

During the 1980s, Tom also served as Chairman of the Oklahoma Republican City. Cole is also involved in national politics, having served as both the NRCC’s Executive Director and the Republican National Committee’s Chief of Staff. Cole worked as a paid consultant for the United States Chamber of Commerce for two years. He defeated Democratic nominee and former Oklahoma State Senator Darryl Roberts in the main election, winning 53.8 percent of the vote to Roberts’ 46.1 percent.

Cole has been re-elected eight times despite never having faced a tough race. In 2004 and 2010, the Democrats didn’t even field a candidate. Cole is mentioned in Mary Kathryn Nagle’s play Silver of a Full Moon for his role in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2013.

Cole has repeatedly vetoed anti-abortion and pro-business policies in favor of free trade, gun rights, the military, veterans, and American-Native American problems. He also advocates easing immigration restrictions and enacting stronger campaign finance controls. Cole sponsored H.R. 5912 in 2012. Cole was the author of the Home School Equity Act for Tax Relief in 2013, as well as the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act of 2015.
