Tommy Tune was born Thomas James Tune on February 28, 1939, and measures 6 feet 612 inches (1.99 meters) tall. The now-81-year-old was born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, as the son of Jim Tune, an oil rig worker, horse trainer, and restaurateur, and Eva Mae Clark. He went to Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in Houston and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Houston.

Professionalism

Tommy Tune made his Broadway debut in the musical Baker Street in 1965. The next year, he appeared in A Joyful Noise, another musical. He later appeared in the 1967 comedy musical How Now, Dow Jones.

Tune received his first Tony Award as a performer in Seesaw, a 1973 musical that also marked his debut as an associate choreographer. With the 1978 musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, he ventured into directing and choreography. For his choreography, he received a Tony Award. He went on to direct and/or choreograph eight Broadway shows, winning a total of ten Tony Awards. He has also received eight Drama Desk Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Tune made his film debut as Ambrose Kemper in the 1969 musical love comedy Hello, Dolly! He also appeared as Sir Thomas in a few episodes of Fred Rogers’ educational children’s television series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Tune also appeared as Argyle Austero in the fourth and fifth seasons of the resurrected Netflix series Arrested Development.
