Tony Dow was cast in his first on-screen role, Wally Cleaver, despite having no prior acting experience. He was a cast member of the show for six years, until it ended in 1963. He went on to star in a number of other films and television shows after the show ended. My Three Sons, Dr. Kildare, The Greatest Show on Earth, Never Too Young, and five episodes of Mr. Novak are among these projects. Mr. Novak played three separate characters in the program. Dow decided to take a vacation from acting after all of those appearances. Dow served in the National Guard from 1965 to 1968.

He returned to acting after serving in the National Guard and appeared as a guest star in the television shows Adam-12, Love American Style, Knight Rider, Square Pegs, The Mod Squad, The Hardy Boys, and Emergency.
