McDonald acquired his first part-time job at Radio Trinidad and then got a second one at the University College of the West Indies, where he studied International Relations. During the 1960s, he also worked as a print and broadcast journalist in Trinidad, and in 1969, he was hired as a producer by BBC Radio, which was situated in London but still broadcasted to the Caribbean. Later, in 1973, he joined Independent Television News (ITN) as a general reporter. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a sports correspondent with a focus on international politics.

Trevor spent some time with the ITN-produced Channel 4 News in late 1980, and then returned to ITV in 1989 to host the early evening news. He is also a documentary filmmaker who has worked on projects from 2009 to 2018. His debut documentary, The Secret Caribbean with Trevor McDonald, was released in 2009, and his most recent, James Bulger: A Mother’s Story with Trevor McDonald, was released in 2018. Aside from that, he has worked in a variety of fields and has been in the media on multiple occasions. Aside from that, he has appeared in a few films. The Iron Lady (2011), The Royal Wedding: Celebration (2011), The Queen (2006), and The Baltic Storm are a few of them (2003).
