Early Years and Career

Tristan Thompson was born on March 13, 1991, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as the oldest of four sons to Jamaican parents Trevor and Andrea Thompson. For his freshman and sophomore years in high school, he played basketball at Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School. Tristan’s relationship with then-St. Benedict coach Dan Hurley hit a rough patch 21 games into his junior year. Hurley’s abrasive coaching style started to wear on the young basketball player. Hurley confronted Thompson during a time out during a game against top-ranked Mater Hei, resulting in a heated argument and Thomas being sent off the court. He was later removed from the team, but over the next few days, he was vocal about his intention to leave, resulting in a barrage of calls from top prep schools across the country looking to acquire the young star’s skills. The following week, he transferred to Findlay Prep. Thompson had an immediate impact on the team and thrived under Findlay head coach Michael Peck’s system and coaching style.

Thompson was a McDonald’s All-American after his senior year, making him the fourth and fifth player in history to do so, along with teammate Cory Joseph. Tristan was named a Jordan Brand Classic All-American as well. Thompson attended The University of Texas, where he received the Wayman Tisdale Award as the USBWA National Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, All-Big 12 Defensive Team, and Big 12 All-Rookie Team. He only played for Texas for one season. He had told the media following the NCAA tournament that he intended to return to college basketball for his sophomore year, but he had changed his mind. He declared for the NBA draft on April 21, 2011.

Professional Development

Thompson was selected fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft. He was the highest-drafted Canadian-born player in NBA history at the time (until Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins were selected for the first picks overall in 2013 and 2014.) During the 2011 NBA lockout, Thompson attended classes at the University of Texas to complete his bachelor’s degree. On December 9, 2011, just before the start of training camp, he signed his rookie contract with the Cavaliers. Thompson made his professional debut in December 2011 against his hometown Toronto Raptors. He scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in just seventeen minutes off the bench. Tristan finished the season with averages of 8.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in 60 games, and he was named to the NBA All-Rookie second team, making him the first Canadian to do so.

During the 2013 offseason, he decided to switch his shooting hand from left to right. Despite the change, he started all 82 games and finished tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference with 36 double-doubles, a team-leading, and career-high. The Cavaliers acquired LeBron James during the 2014 season. Thompson came off the bench for the majority of the season, solidifying his status as one of the league’s best offensive rebounders. That season, Thompson and the Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals for the first time.
