Tyrann Mathieu graduated from high school with a stellar athletic record, including being one of the top long jumpers in the state and setting personal bests in both the high jump (1.93 meters) and the long jump (25 meters) (7.29 meters). He was a four-star recruit in football, with 32 tackles, one sack, and five interceptions as a senior, and was ranked as the nation’s No. 13 cornerback in 2010.

Career OF Tyrann Mathieu

Mathieu has accepted an athletic scholarship to play for Louisiana State University. He played college football for two seasons (2010-2011), winning the 2011 Cotton Bowl Classic’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award and the 2011 SEC Championship Game’s Most Valuable Player award.

His near-perfect start was ruined, however, when he was suspended for violating LSU’s drug policy on October 19, 2011. Despite his 1.75m height, his tenacious ability to face larger opponents on the field earned him a Heisman Trophy nominee. On December 8, 2011, he received the college’s annual Chuck Bednarik Award, which marked the end of his season. Mathieu did not play any football in the year 2012. On February 26, 2013, he revealed his desire to enter the 2013 NFL Draft and attend the annual Scouting Combine. He was drafted in the third round (69th overall) by the Arizona Cardinals as the sixth safety drafted in 2013. He was rated as the third-best cornerback prospect. He made his career debut in the Cardinals’ season-opening game against the St. Louis Rams, when he started as a backup free safety.

Mathieu’s first taste of winning with the team came in Week 4 of the 2013 season, and he went on to win two more games before tearing his left ACL and LCL on December 8, 2013, putting him on the injured reserve list and terminating his rookie season. He missed training camp and the Cardinals’ season-opening game in Week 1 of 2014 while recovering from the injury. Tyrann joined the squad as a backup free safety in Week 2 and then became the starting free safety, helping the Cardinals to three victories against their opponents (Wk 2, 9 and 10). He missed Weeks 13–14 of the 2014 season due to a thumb injury sustained on November 30, 2014. On September 27, 2015, the NFL standout scored his first career touchdown and had a career-high two interceptions in a game against the San Francisco 49ers. Following the season, he was named to his first Pro Bowl, was voted a first-team All-Pro safety by the Associated Press, and was placed 28th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016.

On August 2, 2016, the Arizona Cardinals extended his contract for another five years, totaling $62.5 million. He did, however, miss the most of the season due to a shoulder injury he sustained in a Week 8 game against the Carolina Panthers. On December 23, 2016, the team placed him on the injured reserve list after he struggled in two of the next six games of the season.

Mathieu stayed with the Cardinals for the 2017 season, appearing in 16 games and racking up two interceptions and 78 total sacks. In 66 games during his five seasons with the team (2013-2017), he totaled 308 combined tackles (283 solos), 44 pass deflections, 12 interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a score. The Cardinals waived him on March 14, 2018, after he refused to accept a pay cut. Tyrann Mathieu signed a one-year agreement with the Houston Texans and has appeared in four games with one interception and 23 total tackles.
