On July 1st of this year, his transfer from Torque to Universidad de Chile was made permanent.

MLS New York City

He agreed to a loan with Major League Soccer team New York City FC on July 27, 2018, that would last through the end of the current campaign. Against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, he started and netted his first goal for New York City FC. Prior to the 2019 season, on November 29, 2018, NYCFC used their option to buy Castellanos.

In 30 games this season, Castellanos helped New York City’s offensive with 11 goals and 7 assists. With the help of this format, NYCFC was able to win the Eastern Conference and earn a spot in their inaugural CONCACAF Champions League.

With six goals and three assists in 22 games during a season that was cut short by the COVID-19 Pandemic, Castellanos’ production decreased in 2020. Castellanos had trouble converting opportunities as he had a season-ending G/90 of only 0.40 despite having an xG/90 of 0.65. In the Eastern Conference standings, the New York City Football Club would place fifth. In the first round of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, Castellanos had his first penalty saved in a shootout against Orlando City, but VAR overturned the decision because goalkeeper Pedro Gallese had crossed the goal line too early. Even though he converted his second penalty, NYCFC was eliminated from the playoffs after losing the shootout 6-5.

Castellanos was able to finish considerably more frequently during the 2021 campaign, becoming just the fifth player in MLS history to score in each of their team’s opening four games. Valentin Castellanos then extended his contract with NYCFC through 2025 on May 13, 2021. Castellanos played a major role in the offensive for New York City in 2021.

With Girona, who had recently been promoted to La Liga, Castellanos agreed on a season-long loan.He became the first player to accomplish so in a league match against Real Madrid since December 1947, when Esteban Echevarra scored five goals for Oviedo in a 7-1 triumph. He scored four goals for Girona on April 25, 2023, in their 4-2 victory over Real Madrid.
